The maintenance of cello

The cello is a kind of western musical instrument. It is an essential sub-tenor or bass-stringed instrument in the orchestra. It belongs to the lower and middle musical instruments of the cello family. The cello has a mellow voice and a cheerful personality. It is good at playing lyrical melodies and expressing deep and complex feelings. It also shares the bass part of harmony with the bass. It is called "music lady".

●The influence of air on cello

The maintenance of cello

A well-made cello can have a long life. It is amazing that some of the masterpieces of cello makers in Cremona, Italy, in the early 16th century are still played by professional musicians, although their structures are relatively fragile. The service life and performance status of an instrument are of course closely related to the maintenance of the instrument by the instrument owner. The change of air and other factors also constantly threaten the performance of the instrument.

The influence of air on cello

Dampness and dryness have a great impact on stringed instruments. Wood likes moisture, and the moisture content of the wood nucleus tends to change constantly to adapt to the surrounding air. When the air is dry, the wood shrinks and may be damaged by internal tension. When the air is moist for a long time, it may cause mildew and wood fiber decay. Do not place the instrument too close to the radiator or put it in the car exposed to the sun, so as to avoid causing great damage to the instrument.

To avoid sudden changes in humidity and temperature, the instrument should be stored indoors with a relative humidity of 45-55%. In winter, when the central heating system makes the air in the building completely dry and the occasional severe cold makes the air moisture solidify, the wood starts to shrink. If the belly and back plate of the cello instrument are glued too tightly, and cannot be separated at the joint of the side plate, cracks will occur. You know, it is much easier to repair a cracked joint than to glue a crack again. In summer, when the moisture is too heavy, the wood begins to expand due to absorbing moisture, which weakens the structure of the material and reduces the resistance of the relatively thin belly of the piano to the huge force produced by the tight strings. The combination of these stresses acting on the piano belly and the changing resistance of the wood will lead to the increase of the piano horse and the decrease of the fingerboard in summer, but the opposite is true in winter.

Another hazard of moisture in summer is to distort the neck. In a humid environment, ebony fingerboards and maple necks with different densities will also expand differently, thus starting to appear distorted. In addition, it is easier to add water to the instrument in winter than to remove water in summer. The role of the piano horse is to support the strings and transmit vibration. Depending on the cutting, shaping, and material of the horse, various flexibility/hardness can be adjusted, which greatly affects the timbre of the sound and the resistance to the bow.
